On a chilly mid-week match in downtown Tulsa, the Tulsa Roughnecks F.C. found its first result of 2018, playing to a 0-0 draw against the Portland Timbers 2 Wednesday night at ONEOK Field.  Goalkeeper Fabian Cerda and the Roughnecks backline combined to record the team’s first clean sheet of the season.

With the draw Tulsa improves to 0-3-1 on the year, while Timbers 2 move to 1-2-1.

The Roughnecks had chances to find the net and collect the full three points.  In the 22nd minute, Fernando Arce took a left-footed shot from just outside the box, but it sailed just high of the crossbar.

Ten minutes later, Paris Gee came close when he took a shot from outside the box, but his effort curled just wide of the net.

After the break, Arce came within inches of a goal in the 62nd minute, but his shot from just outside the box caromed off the crossbar.

The best chance of the match came from the Roughnecks in the 86th minute when Arce served a brilliant, corner kick cross to Claudio Munoz.  The defender’s right-footed shot appeared headed to the far corner of the net, but Timbers 2 goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh made a diving, finger-tip save to maintain the scoreless draw.

It would remain that way, giving the team a split of the points.

“It wasn’t what we wanted, but I thought the trajectory of the team was much better,” said TRFC Head Coach David Vaudreuil.  “The most important thing was we did not give up any goals.  Fabian didn’t have a lot to do, and defensively as a group, I thought we played very well for most of the game.  Offensively, we created the chances, and it hasn’t always been that way.  But, we have got to be a little smarter and more composed.  We flew four or five balls over the crossbar, but I think we were pressing a little bit.”

The Roughnecks will now have a couple weeks off before they head out west to take on Fresno FC on Wednesday, April 18 in what will be the first of three straight road matches. Tulsa will return to ONEOK Field on Wednesday, May 9 when they host Reno 1868 FC. Tickets are available online by clicking HERE, by calling (918) 744-5901 or by visiting the stadium ticket office.
