Tulsa Roughnecks FC defender Jorge Corrales has been signed by Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer. The Fire has inked the Cuban international through the 2018 season with options for the following two seasons. Corrales will remain in Tulsa this year on loan with the Roughnecks with the Fire retaining the right to recall, subject to MLS roster compliance guidelines.
The defender has been a key component in the Roughnecks resurgence this season, as Tulsa is poised to claim its first-ever USL playoff spot. Corrales has appeared in 25 of TRFC’s 26 matches in 2017, including 24 starts. He leads the Roughnecks with 2,130 minutes played this year while adding one goal and two assists.
“This move presents Jorge with a great opportunity, and it works well for everyone involved,” said TRFC Head Coach David Vaudreuil. “He has had an outstanding season for us thus far and has shown the ability to perform at the MLS level. We look forward to Jorge continuing his strong play with us this season as we try to lock down a berth in the USL playoffs."
The play from Corrales this season caught the attention of Fire General Manager Nelson Rodriguez.
“We’ve had the chance to see Jorge quite a bit this season,” said Rodríguez. “We were impressed by his play with Tulsa and in training with us. This signing is also credit to the competitive environment of the Roughnecks.”
Corrales had spent a week in Chicago earlier this season training with the Fire. Like Tulsa, Chicago is primed to secure a playoff spot in MLS. The Fire are currently in third position in the Eastern Conference table of MLS.
“We appreciate our relationship with Nelson and the Fire organization,” added Vaudreuil. “It is a partnership that has been valuable for us, and we hope that it will continue to offer opportunities for our organization and players in the future.”
Corrales and the Roughnecks will be in action this Sunday with the final regular season edition of the Black Gold Derby. Tulsa will travel down the Turner Turnpike to Oklahoma City to face the Energy. Kickoff at OKC’s Taft Stadium is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. The Roughnecks have won the previous two meetings this seasons by identical 2-1 scores.
