With a chance to clinch a berth in the United Soccer League playoffs Saturday night, the Tulsa Roughnecks FC could not find a goal and fell to San Antonio FC 2-0 at ONEOK Field.   It was the first time this year that TRFC was shut out in a home match.

With the defeat, the Roughnecks remained on 43 points for the season with a 13-12-4 record.  Tulsa could have clinched the first USL playoff berth in franchise history with a victory.  The Roughnecks will still wrap up a postseason spot with a victory in any of their three remaining games this season.

An indication of how the night would go came less than a minute after the opening kickoff when Tulsa had a good chance to grab an early lead as Paris Gee fed Joaquin Rivas into open space in front of goal, but the shot went over the crossbar.

It would be the first of many missed opportunities for the Roughnecks.

The best first-half chance came when defender Modou Jadama got open on a free kick,  but his right-footed effort on the cross from Juan Pablo Caffa was turned aside by SAFC keeper Diego Restrepo.

San Antonio would make TRFC pay for its missed opportunities in the second half.  In the 70th minute, SAFC captain Michael Reed delivered a near-perfect corner kick that was headed into the net by defender Mark O’Ojong for the first goal.

With Tulsa pushing forward looking for an equalizer, Billy Forbes burned the Roughnecks on the counterattack in the 88th minute.  Forbes left Roughnecks goalkeeper Fabian Cerda with no chance as he rolled his shot inside the far post to put the match away.

It put an end to a frustrating night for the Roughnecks.  TRFC held a 55-45% advantage in possession and out-shot San Antonio 23-15 while holding an 11-3 edge in corner kicks.

“It’s disappointing that we played so hard and controlled so much of the game and not get rewarded for it,” said TRFC Head Coach David Vaudreuil.  “You get punished for not finishing your chances, and we just weren’t sharp enough.”

Tulsa’s next chance to clinch a playoff berth will come Wednesday night.  The Roughnecks will travel to Arizona to face Phoenix Rising, who entered the weekend on a ten-match unbeaten run.  Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. CDT on Wednesday.

The next home match for the Roughnecks will take place in a week on Saturday, October 7 when the Seattle Sounders 2 visits ONEOK Field.  Kickoff for that match is set for 7:00 p.m. CDT and tickets are available by clicking HERE.
