The Tulsa Roughnecks FC capped an undefeated month of July Monday night by picking up a valuable away point with a 0-0 draw with Real Monarchs SLC at Rio Tinto Stadium.  The result leaves TRFC in a playoff position in the USL’s Western Conference with 26 points and an 8-8-2 record, including a 3-0-2 mark during July.

The draw marks the first time this season that the league-leading Monarchs have failed to win a home match.  They came into the game with a perfect 9-0-0 record at Rio Tinto.  It was also only the second time this season that they have been held scoreless, and the Roughnecks have been the opponent both times.

The pedestrian-paced match featured a kickoff temperature of 90 degrees, and the scoring chances were limited for both sides.

The best offensive flurry in the first half came in a quick 60-second stretch in the 34th minute.  The dangerous Sebastian Velasquez curled a shot just wide of TRFC keeper Fabian Cerda’s far post.  Seconds later, Juan Caffa got behind the Monarchs defense, but the Tulsa captain’s shot was smothered by SLC keeper Connor Sparrow.

In the second half, Joaquin Rivas forced a save by Sparrow in the 61st minute, and five minutes later, Monarchs substitute Jose Hernandez fired a blast straight at Cerda.

In stoppage time, TRFC defender Modou Jadama headed a corner kick just wide of the post before the final whistle blew.

It was the sixth shutout this season for Tulsa and the fifth for Cerda.

It was not all good news for the Roughnecks as they played most of the second half without veteran right back Kosuke Kimura.  Kimura was injured on a challenge just after the restart and was replaced by Paris Gee.  It appeared to be a left leg injury for the former MLS defender.

They suffered another injury blow in the 82nd minute when center back Bradley Bourgeois limped off the field and was replaced by Francisco Ugarte.

The pair will have five days to recover as the Roughnecks will now return to Tulsa for a big stretch of three straight home matches.  It will begin on Saturday, August 5 when TRFC hosts Reno 1868 FC at ONEOK Field.  Reno defeated the Roughnecks 4-0 earlier this season.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in downtown Tulsa and tickets are available by clicking HERE.
